Grounding technique to soothe your anxiety
Feeling anxious?
Try this grounding technique and learn to soothe yourself;
✨ Sitting in a chair, take a deep breath in through your nose, and gently exhale.
✨ Take a moment and notice how you are feeling – the physical feelings the anxiety brings up.
✨ Now place your feet barefoot on the floor, moving until you really feel connected to the floor, noticing the feeling of the ground/ carpet under your feet.
✨ Now feel your back and bottom on the chair, noticing how the chair supports you. If you find you are perching on the chair, relax into the chair, allowing it to support you.
✨ Adjust until you feel totally comfortable. Take your total awareness to enjoying the comfort of being supported by the chair and stabilised by the floor, which in turn is steadily held by the earth under the building.
✨ Look around and notice something that feels resourceful (e.g. the tree right outside the window, a piece of art, a calming colour of a cushion in the room, the patterns of the floor, etc.). Savour and really focus on the feelings these items bring up.
✨ Try to “loose” yourself in an object while clearing your mind of any other thoughts. Don’t over-analyse or judge your thoughts, simply just be and observe.
✨ Continue to breath gently and calmly throughout this grounding exercise.
✨ After a few moments, what do you notice now about your overall comfort – physically and emotionally?
